Join Me On The Journey

 Several years ago, a friend handed me an audio tape.  It contained a message from Jim Cymbala, Senior Pastor of the Brooklyn Tabernacle in New York.  In the middle of his message he spoke right into my heart.  He said, “Most Pastors and church leaders are Technicians. We talk a lot about prayer, but do very little praying.”  My heart was pierced and my soul convicted. 

At that point in my ministry I decided to become a better student of prayer.  I longed to read the prayers of the great men and women of old.  To discover why they seemed to be successful in prayer and I wasn’t.  They were touching heaven.  In my life the heavens were as brass. 

One morning during my quiet time God spoke into my heart and said, “Steve, for too long you have been a man who believes in prayer.  I want to make you a man of prayer.  I want you to long for me as I have longed for you.” Since then God has taken me on many journeys into prayer.  There have been times I felt His breath on my face.  At other times, He seemed to be strangely silent. Some days I climbed the mountain with Him.  I also walked through the desert places (one time as long as three years).

Through it all God has graciously allowed me to catch a glimpse into His heart, and I want to share with you what I have seen.  I believe the heart of the Father is an open wound of love.  He aches over our distance and division. He mourns that we do not draw near to Him.  He grieves that we have neglected Him in prayer.  He grouns over our obsession with “muchness” and “manyness.”  He longs for our presence. He desires that we come to Him.

And He is inviting you and me, like the Prodigal, to come home.  His arms are stretched out wide to receive us.  His heart is enlarged to take us in.  He desires intimacy with us. 

Come and join me in a journey toward intimacy with the Father. Schedule the time for us to be with you as we  strike out onto this disciplined journey into the holy place.  For too long we have been in a far country.  It is time to come home to our Father’s house.  I look forward to seeing and working with you.
